I've been working on my portrait skills in the past couple of weeks. I've chewed through one of Kris Costa's workshops and it's been really super helpful, I learned a ton, especially walking the extra mile and not settling for something less than you envisioned. I hope the progress is visible for others as well. I'm quite happy with the result.
The concept of the project is based on Face Zero's 'study mans face' ( https://www.artstation.com/artwork/ealGW6 ), but I wanted to push the mood and aesthetics towards a little bit of my favourite hungarian painter Munkácsy Mihály's stlye. Which is funny enough the name of the primary school i went to as a kid.
I hand sculpted everything in Zbrush HD, and handpainted the maps in Zbrush as well. No scans were involved in the creation of this project, that wasn't the point.
